1. Tell us about yourself.
I am a Chinese medicine practitioner, based in Essex, UK. After working in the health & fitness industry for over 20 years (as a gym instructor, tennis coach and in sports development then management) I decided that I wanted to directly affect peoples health. I had worked part time as a bereavement counselor for 20 years and felt that if I wanted to treat people holistically I needed a physical therapy also, so chose acupuncture. I quit my job/career and at the age of 55 embarked on full time study to realise that dream. I now have my own clinic, run with a friend and we are beginning to work with more people and different disciplines such as Reiki, reflexology, neurology and western forms of physiotherapy.
2. What made you interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine?
I have always been drawn to it! From a very young age, I was always able to 'feel' people's energy, so the theory that Qi, or energy runs along invisible channels in the body made perfect sense. Then many years ago, I suffered a bad fall and injured my back. I was told that I would have to give up tennis, which was my livelihood at that time! I tried a few therapies then found an acupuncturist who said with complete conviction that he could fix my back and any other problems I had - one of which was a thyroid condition. The effects really amazed me and I read everything I could about it! From then, it was something that I wanted to do myself.
3. What is the biggest benefit that you have received from Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Apart from the health benefits to myself, I would say that there is an amazing feeling of being connected to the energy that you are influencing by placing the needles. It makes you very aware of the different layers of being.
4. If there were one thing you could tell people to try to do that would help them on their journey, what would it be?
In my 40s, I really wanted to to study Chinese medicine, but convinced myself I couldn't afford it and that I was too old! More than 10 years after that, I just did it. You are never too old, age really is just a number. Everything is possible!
5. Do you have a healing affirmation, words of wisdom or message that you would like to share with readers?
It would have to be this; to become aware of grace in your life - it can be a difficult concept, but if you can accept that grace is a force that is there for all of us, then believing in ourselves and having faith in the future becomes easy.
