The autumn sun was already going down when I looked at the camera lens. It was Tuesday evening, and my photographer friend was taking the last photos of the photoshoot. I felt the gentle sea breeze on my skin. The sand felt cool beneath my feet as I walked to sit on a rock near the water’s edge.

I closed my eyes for a moment and listened: waves lapping against the shore, seagulls crying out for one another and distant music from the restaurant nearby. As I opened my eyes, I saw a beautiful sunset. Yet there was a nagging feeling inside me… That’s when I knew that some time off was what I needed to really reconnect with myself and my purpose.

“When life becomes too complicated and we feel overwhelmed, it’s often useful just to stand back and remind ourselves of our overall purpose, our overall goal. When faced with a feeling of stagnation and confusion, it may be helpful to take an hour, an afternoon, or even several days to simply reflect on what it is that will truly bring us happiness, and then reset our priorities on the basis of that. This can put our life back in proper context, allow a fresh perspective, and enable us to see which direction to take.” ― Dalai Lama

It’s an easy thing to do but it’s also easy to forget. We get so caught up in our daily lives and schedules that we can get lost in the doing. Sometimes it might even feel like we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel as we may feel stress, sadness, or even grief about what is happening in the world.

What helped me most is reconnecting back to my big why – a deep sense of purpose.

Knowing why you are doing what you are doing is so powerful. It can help you get through tough times and guide you during the good times.

You can start by taking some time – it doesn’t need to be long – to simply reflect on what it is that truly brings you a feeling of fulfillment.  This could mean writing down all the things or simply sitting quietly with your thoughts.

When you reconnect with your purpose, it can feel like everything makes sense again and gratitude can fill your heart.
